Period pain is caused by the womb contracting; anti-inflammatory painkillers block the chemicals (prostaglandins) that drive those contractions, which is why they work better than paracetamol for most people.
If ibuprofen from the shop isn’t enough, naproxen is the stronger option a GP would normally prescribe. Our pharmacists can now supply it privately for anyone aged 16 and over after a short consultation.
Heat, gentle exercise and starting painkillers early — before the pain peaks — all help. Pain that is getting worse, that stops you doing normal things, or that comes with very heavy bleeding should be looked at by a GP.
