Meningococcal group B bacteria cause the majority of bacterial meningitis and septicaemia in the UK. It can go from a mild fever to life-threatening in hours, and survivors are often left with lasting damage. Babies, toddlers and 15–24-year-olds are the highest-risk groups.
The NHS gives Bexsero to babies born from September 2015. That leaves older children, teenagers, students and adults uncovered. Both licensed vaccines — Bexsero from 2 months, Trumenba from 10 — are available privately at any of our branches.
Know the signs regardless: fever with a rash that doesn’t fade under a glass, stiff neck, dislike of bright light, drowsiness, and in babies a high-pitched cry or bulging fontanelle. Any of those is a 999 call.
