Choosing malaria tablets: Malarone vs doxycycline vs mefloquine

By the Sandwell Pharmacy Group team · Clinically reviewed by Jeetender Singh Sahota, Superintendent Pharmacist (GPhC 2048691) · September 2026 · 3 min read

Malaria kills; it’s also entirely preventable with the right tablets taken properly. Which tablet is right depends on the destination’s resistance patterns, how long you’re away, and your own medical history.

Malarone is taken daily, has few side effects and only needs to continue for a week after you return — but it’s the most expensive. Doxycycline is daily, cheap and effective but makes skin sun-sensitive and continues for four weeks after. Mefloquine is weekly and long-established, but isn’t suitable for anyone with a history of depression, anxiety or seizures.

Whichever you choose, start before you travel, don’t miss doses, and finish the course after you’re home. Bite avoidance — DEET repellent, covering up at dusk, nets — is the other half of prevention. Our pharmacists can supply all three privately after a travel consultation, for anyone 12 and over.
