HPV vaccination for adults: it’s not just for school

By the Sandwell Pharmacy Group team · Clinically reviewed by Jeetender Singh Sahota, Superintendent Pharmacist (GPhC 2048691) · September 2026 · 3 min read

Human papillomavirus is extremely common — most sexually active people meet it at some point. A handful of high-risk types cause almost all cervical cancer and a large share of anal, penile, throat and mouth cancers; two other types cause genital warts.

Gardasil 9 covers nine types and is the vaccine used in the NHS school programme. Anyone who missed it, arrived in the UK after school age, or is over the NHS limit can be vaccinated privately at any of our branches from age 9 — two doses under 15, three from 15.

It works best before exposure but still has real value for adults, because it protects against the types you haven’t met yet. It doesn’t replace cervical screening — keep attending your smears.
