Hirsutism — excess hair in a male pattern on the face and body — is common and often runs in families or comes with polycystic ovary syndrome. It’s not dangerous, but it can be miserable.
Vaniqa (eflornithine) is the one prescription cream licensed for it. It blocks an enzyme in the hair follicle, slowing growth, so removal is needed less often and regrowth is finer and lighter. It takes about eight weeks to show and stops working if you stop using it.
It doesn’t remove hair, so it’s used alongside your usual routine. If hair growth is new and rapid, or comes with irregular periods, acne or weight change, it’s worth a GP visit to check for a hormonal cause — our pharmacists will say so if that applies to you.
