Erectile dysfunction: the facts, and where to get help locally

By the Sandwell Pharmacy Group team · Clinically reviewed by Jeetender Singh Sahota, Superintendent Pharmacist (GPhC 2048691) · September 2026 · 3 min read

Erectile dysfunction is common — around half of men over 40 experience it at some point — and it is very treatable. It’s also worth taking seriously because it can be an early sign of circulation or blood-pressure problems.

Sildenafil and tadalafil both increase blood flow when you’re aroused. They don’t create desire and they don’t work without stimulation. Sildenafil is a short-acting, take-it-when-needed option; tadalafil lasts long enough that timing matters less.

The most important safety check is nitrates: if you use GTN spray or tablets for angina, these medicines are unsafe for you. Our pharmacists check this, your blood pressure and your other medicines before supplying anything.

Lifestyle matters too — smoking, alcohol, weight and stress all play a part. If ED is new, persistent, or you have other symptoms, please also see your GP.
